Social Justice Art
A Framework for Activist Art Pedagogy
Author: Marit Dewhurst
Publisher: Harvard Education Press, 2014
Social Justice Art explores how young students can be encouraged to think about topics of social justice through the learning – and doing – of art. Drawing upon what she learned from students in a New York museum's activist art class, author Marit Dewhurst provides art educators with strategies to incorporate activist art projects in their teaching. Students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds participated in a 14-week program at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Dewhurst found that through creating activist art, students developed skills for critical thinking, leadership, community engagement, and communication.
