This book is, at its heart, about the unconditional love all children deserve. This story puts the child’s experience at the center. Aidan’s journey from being born a girl, coming out as transgender and now preparing for the arrival of a new sibling are told almost without the words transgender (once) and gender (never) – joy, love and affirmation shine through. It’s an endearing and intimate portrayal of a family (refreshingly, all people of color) learning to adapt to new realities. The illustrations, which  follow the text in avoiding male/female binary stereotypes, make this book both emotionally and visually satisfying.
