Another book from our list for the #MaratonaAntirazzista. An amazing example of so much: beautiful writing and illustrations; timeless values and dynamics; seamlessly natural intersectionality that reflects the true complexity of everyday identities. The main character is a bi-racial queer kid with divorced parents including a practicing Catholic mom. He has suffered bullying, racism and homophobia (depicted) and has found allies who he can rely on. And his parents are ideal, but also realistic, models of parents and human beings. And it even has a respectful, loving and critical discussion of Catholicism and faith! All of the books in Anastasia Higginbotham’s series on Ordinary Terrible Things are immensely thoughtful, and thought-provoking, and they hold at their core a deep respect for children as the authority on their own lives.
