King For A Day is a singularly equalizing book. The ancient festival of Basant celebrates the arrival of spring, and with it comes the traditional sport of kite fighting. Malik, skillfully using his handmade small kite to conquer the bully next door in the kite battle, is a real hero; that he uses a wheelchair is incidental to the story. Kindness tops aggression in this tale that does a remarkable job of taking a universal theme, adding some culture, and finding artists to empower minorities without making it an issue. Mixed media collage illustrations are a stunning match to the moving story. Truly a book filled with love and understanding.
